What comes with my weathervane?

Do I need mounting hardware if I have a cupola?

Our cupolas come ready to install a weathervane and mounting hardware is NOT needed. If an existing cupola is being used - a 3/4" hole (for standard size weathervanes) must be drilled in the center of the cupola roof and a secure brace must be inside the cupola with a 3/4" hole in the center of the board.

How long does it take to get my weathervane?

Our answer is typically 2-5 days before your order is shipped from our factory, but most order are shipped out within just a few days of receiving the order. The exceptions are some of our larger cupolas or anything not currently in stock. If there is going to be a delay in shipment - you will be notified.

What will happen to my copper weathervane's shiny finish?

The copper weathervane will react to the elements of the weather and will slowly turn from a reddish-brown natural copper color to a darker brownish-black and eventually to the natural green patina finish. This process starts almost immediately with exposure to the elements and can take up to 10 years or so to complete - much depends on the weather conditions in your area.

What size cupola do I need?

It is generally recommended to have approximately 1 1/4 inches of cupola roof for every foot of unbroken roof line.For example for a 24" roof line we would recommend a 30" cupola.

Do I need a weathervane rod extension?

Most of the time - no. Every now and then a cupola maker does not install the inner brace to support your weathervane and the extension is needed. Our cupolas come weathervane ready and do not need the extension. It is not recommended to use the rod extension with a roof mount due to instability.

Does my weathervane need a retaining clip?

Only if there is a washer at the bottom of the weathervane rod. Each weathervane is designed differently. Some can take the wind just fine, but others like the heron weathervane or the duck weatherane need the retaining clip to prevent "liftoff" of your weathervane when there is a strong updraft. Most weathervanes do not need the clip.

Do I need to ground my weathervane against lightening?

This is an individual call. We sell a lot of weathervanes and have not had any complaints of lightening strikes. However, we cannot predict where the next lightening strike will hit.
